The Mater Hospital: Belfast
Back lit stained glass in café / entrance area. This 4m x 2m back lit panel is in the hospital new extension. The work is a welcoming gesture, it is about movement and the relationship and tensions between forms, influenced by the Irish artist, William Scott. The colours are warm, a blue sky, warm oranges and browns, avoiding any red glass which could have associations of blood. It is executed in the traditional leaded glass technique with some acid etching to enrich the surfaces. Not shown are two additional paintings for the hospital and an enamelled glass window for the Chapel of Rest. I also did a weekend workshop with eight hospital employees, who each made a small stained glass panel which was joined together and hangs in the entrance area. The project was funded by the National Lottery. |
